What is the Bad News?

I was going to talk about the good news today, but I think I need to first give the bad news and then the good news.


So what is the bad news?


I'm a sinner. You're a sinner. We are all sinners.


For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23


God, the Creator of everything, is holy. That means that God does not sin. He does not even have the ability to sin. He also cannot be in the presence of sin.


There was a time when man was without sin and he walked with God in the garden. Can you even imagine walking and talking with God? Wow!


But then man sinned and we are all under the curse. How can you easily help someone else to see their sin? Ask them a couple questions such as:


Have you ever told a lie? What do you call someone who lies? A liar.
Have you ever stolen anything? What do you call someone who steals? A thief.
Have you ever lusted after a man/woman in your mind? Jesus says this is the same thing as adultery.


So now the person has admitted to being a liar, thief and adulterer (or even other sins).


Remember we said that God is holy and cannot be in the presence of sin?  Well, if we want to go to heaven when we die, there is a big problem. We are sinners and God cannot be around sinners.


So should a person just be moral and perform as many good works as they possibly can? I mean, sell all their possessions and give it all to the poor? Move to India and work in a hospital for the poor and dying? Spend their days in a soup kitchen and nights handing out food and blankets to the homeless?

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. Isaiah 64:6
So our good works are like filthy rags (this is actually a term used to describe a woman's menstrual cloth - ick!)? That is because our good works are all ill-intentioned because we are fallen and depraved.

So you were born a sinful person, sin all the time, think about sinning all the time and cannot do anything on your own to please God and earn His favor. If you die, you cannot even be in His presence because you are unclean.

Definitely bad news......

Tomorrow is all about the good news.

Healthy Tuesday

Ok, since the majority of my free time (that's a joke since I am the Mom of a 2 yo and homeschool our first grader) is spent with the 31 Days of Good News this month - on Healthy Tuesdays, I will pass along an awesome blogpost that I think will help encourage you. End of the Spear

Have you seen the movie, the End of the Spear? It is an older movie, but fantastic - and worth watching again. That is what we watched this weekend and I am so glad we did. I had forgotten a lot of the movie.

End of the Spear is about the Waodani tribe. This tribe in Ecuador was trapped in a vicious cycle of murder and revenge - hate and violence. They lived to kill and avenge the death of their ancestors. For some reason (not mentioned in the movie), the tribe split and they were battling each other - and had nearly wiped both tribes out via self-inflicted genocide.

Nate Saint and his family were missionaries in Ecuador who had a love for the Waodani Tribe, most likely because of the young girl who had barely escaped with her life to find safety with the white people (was now living as a missionary with Nate's sister). Nate wanted to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to this tribe that desperately needed to be freed from the sins to which they were so enslaved (just the same as we needed to be freed before we were rescued by Jesus).

Nate flew his airplane around looking for this seemingly invisible tribe (there weren't many left). He finally made contact and so he and 4 of his missionary friends, Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian, attempted to engage the Waodani tribe in person.

This starts off wonderful. They seem to be communicating - sort of. The Waodani start asking questions about a sister that had fled the tribe and went to live with the white man and that starts a flurry of action - ending in the death of the 5 missionaries. Tragic! Horrible! How could God allow the 5 missionaries to be killed?!

But the story does not stop there! It goes on to tell how the sister of Nate, other wives and children are moved to continue in the missionary effort and successfully share Jesus with this tribe. It is not an easy process (and they were fearful), but God had His hand on them the entire time. Nate and his friends did not die in vain.

This is a beautiful story about a wonderful group of missionaries spreading the good, no, best news ever! It is proof that Jesus Christ seeks and saves the lost. He searches out for the lost lambs, even if they are in the jungle of Ecuador and do not want to be found.

If you are looking to be inspired, watch this movie (I rented it free at our local library).

If you would rather to sit on your couch and pretend that there are not people still out in the remote places of the world who need Jesus - watch this movie so that your heart can be stirred.

Please take time to pray with me that God will open our eyes and that we will see the lost people right in front of our eyes. We were left on Earth to fulfill one purpose:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20
